The U series is an electric locomotive for the shunting service, which was built from 1930 as a series locomotive, based on the findings of the Ua series for the Swedish state railway Statens Järnvägar and for TGOJ . Some of these locomotives have been modernized over the years; other machines have been sold directly by the manufacturer ASEA to LKAB as the F series and to Norges Statsbaner as the El 10 series .

history

In connection with the construction of the D series mainline locomotives , the SJ began to test electric shunting locomotives in the 1920s. In 1925 three locomotives with the series designation U were ordered from ASEA. The designation of these three locomotives was later changed to Ua .

Construction series Ua

These locomotives had the same type of power transmission as the later U-series locomotives. The electric motor powered all three axles via a jackshaft and from there via coupling rods . The Ua series had the cab at one end of the locomotive. The electric motor was the type ASEA KJ 136, the pantograph type MK-II. The locomotives, painted gray when delivered, were mainly used in the ore port of Svartö on the Malmbanan . It was not until the 1930s that they were painted in the red-brown color that was common at the time. The three locomotives were parked between 1965 and 1970 and scrapped in Notviken by 1971 .

Further series

Due to the poor visibility for the train driver in the Ua series, the driver's cab was relocated to the middle of the locomotive to improve the following series. This gave them the characteristic appearance in the style of the later H series . The stems fell off slightly on both sides. The pantograph was placed on the slightly curved cabin roof. Like all locomotives and wagons from this period, the SJ version was painted red-brown. The TGOJ locomotives were originally delivered in dark green with a yellow decor, later they were given a brown-orange paint with white stripes on the front and back and a white stripe along the driver's cab. The new series have been continuously improved. Towards the end of their service life, locomotives came in several color variants: red-orange with a dark gray top and blue with red diagonal stripes.

Apart from the visually differently designed three pre-series locomotives ( Ua ), there were five different model variants of the U series . The performance data correspond to the last status before the storage:

Construction series Ub

Most of the Ub series were produced between 1930 and 1951 with 123 pieces. Of these, 90 went to the SJ, 14 to LKAB, 5 to TGOJ and 13 to NSB. At SJ, the locomotives drove until the 1990s.

Over the years the stems have been changed several times. These were initially angular with a V-shape on the front side, followed by a smooth front side and finally the hoods were rounded, as in the Ud and H series . Like the D series , the locomotives were later given more powerful engines with 610 kW, which did not result in any change in the series designation or the serial number.

Construction series Uc

Only one copy of the Uc was built. This could be coupled with a battery car (LüP 10.55 m, weight 32.8 tons, price 234,000 crowns ) and had an output of 215 kW in battery mode. The car was scrapped in 1956 and the locomotive then ran as a normal electric locomotive. In 1974 the locomotive received a new KJ 136 engine with an output of 515 kW. From 1972 to 1987 she was stationed in Kristinehamn . In 1979 a new engine with an output of 700 kW was installed. The locomotive was shut down in 1991, and in the same year it was scrapped in Gothenburg .

Construction series Ud

In connection with the large locomotive orders at the end of the 1940s, a modernized version of the Ub was commissioned. An additional jackshaft was installed in order to achieve a better balance of the coupling rods and to improve the driving characteristics in order to increase the top speed from 45 km / h to 60 km / h. In addition, roller bearings were used instead of plain bearings. The driver's cabs were better insulated, similar to the improved locomotives from the D series in Da . This was externally visible on the rubber strips that replaced the wooden strips.

Ud 864, 865, 866, 868 and 870 were prepared for the installation of an automatic coupling in the early 1970s and extended to the new length via buffers of 10,700 mm. Ud 864 and 868 were equipped with type SA3 automatic couplings for moving ore wagons. In 1975 the series was equipped with multiple controls.

The engine power of the type KJ 137, with which the locomotives were supplied, was 620 kW, most of the locomotives were later equipped with engines of the type KJC 137 with 720 kW. The original color of the locomotives was brown. Ud 865 was repainted in red in the late 1980s.

Ud 848–853, 855–861, 867, 870 and 871 were modernized during the 1990s and were given the new series designation Uf , with Uf 870 being restored to its original length.

MTAB Ud

Ud 863-865 and 868 were handed over to Malmtrafik AB - MTAB in 1996. While the first three locomotives were decommissioned and scrapped between 2001 and 2003, 868 went to Norrbotten's Järnvägsmuseum in 1999.

Still available (2012): Ud 854 in the Swedish Railway Museum in Gävle , Ud 868 in the Norrbottens Järnvägsmuseum in Luleå and the spare parts dispenser Ud 872 at Euromaint in Notviken.

Series Ue

The Ue series were converted Ub locomotives ( Ub 167, 169, 170, 246, 247, 249, 251, 252, 254, 256, 260, 263, 264, 276–281, 285, 287, 288, 290, 497, 499, 500, 528-586, 588-590, 592, 593, 645, 646, 648, 649, 652, 653, 688, 690-692, 703, 705, 708-711, 714-717). Together with the Ub 501-501 and 505 bought by TGOJ from 1988 to 1990, these were equipped with a new ASEA KJC 137 engine between 1987 and 1990 in the Notviken main workshop. They also received radio remote control, multiple control and central lubrication. In addition, the originally brown locomotives were given a new coat of paint in gray / blue / yellow. In the early 1990s, the color scheme was changed again to red-orange / dark blue.

The locomotives taken over by TGOJ were given the serial numbers Ue 995 to 998. None of the series is in use.

MTAB Ue

Ue 252, 287, 290 and 652 were sold to Malmtrafik AB (MTAB) in 1996 . Locomotive 252 was equipped with the KJC136 engine, the other three with the KJC137 engine. All four locomotives were shut down in 1997 and scrapped except for Ue 290 2001. Ue 290 followed in 2007.

GC Ue

Ue 290 was sold in 1999 to SJ Goods, which merged into Green Cargo in 2001. It was used until 2007 and was scrapped in Gällivare that year .

Construction series Uf

Uf 849 in Gällivare (2000)

The Uf series were converted Ud locomotives in 1990 and 1991 ( Ud 848–853, 855–861, 867, 870, 871). They were equipped with multiple controls and radio remote control and remained in use with the new series designation and the old company number.

Uf 850, 853, 855–857, 859, 867 and 870 were parked between 1996 and 1997 and scrapped by 2001.

MTAB Uf

Uf 861 and 871 were sold to Malmtrafik AB (MTAB) in 1996 and were only used there for a short time. They were shut down in 1997 and scrapped in Kiruna in 2001 .

EuroMaint Uf

EuroMaint took over the Uf 848, 849 and 851 between 2001 and 2002. They were in use from Hagalund until 2010, then from Notviken, where they were replaced by V4 and Z66 diesel locomotives .

TrainMaint North Uf

Uf 860 was taken over by TrainMaint Nord in 2001 . The company passed the locomotive on to TraffiCare AB in the same year .

TraffiCare Uf

In 2001, TraffiCare AB took over the Uf 852 and 858 locomotives from SJ and the 860 from TrainMaint Nord AB . 852 and 858 were scrapped in Hagalund in 2006.

In 2011 only one locomotive, the Uf 860, was in operation. It was used for shunting operations in the passenger station in Hagalund , Solna . The locomotive was parked for a long time and was put back into operation in 2010 due to a lack of locomotives. Above all, it was used to move Veolia IC trains .
