Sonett was the name for three types of sports car produced by the Swedish car manufacturer Saab .

Model history

In the mid-1950s, Saab started a development program for the sports sector and designed the Saab Sonett I (94), which was presented at the Stockholm Motor Show in 1955 and manufactured until early 1957. The body was made of riveted aluminum plates. The engine, a 3-cylinder two-stroke engine with 748 cm³ displacement and (performance-enhanced) 57.5 hp , came from the Saab 93 . The maximum torque was 88 Nm at 3500 rpm. The top speed of the almost 500 kg light car was 160 km / h. Only six vehicles were made. The car was 3480 mm long, 1420 mm wide and 825 mm high. The wheelbase was 2210 mm.

The Saab 97 Sonett II was manufactured from 1966 to 1970, initially with a 3-cylinder 2-stroke engine, equipped with three Solex carburetors , which from 748 cc and 60 hp at 5200 rpm has a top speed of approx. 150 km / h and accelerated the car from 0 to 100 km / h in 12.5 seconds. The maximum torque was 94.2 Nm at 4000 rpm. The small coupé (length: 3784 mm, width: 1447 mm, height: 1168 mm) had a GRP body, the curb weight was approx. 660 kg. The Sonett 97 (II) was also available as a Sonett V4 with the Ford Taunus V4 engine , which produced 65 hp (at 4700 rpm) from a displacement of 1498 cm³. The maximum torque in this version was 115 Nm at 2500 rpm. The top speed was 160 km / h, the car accelerated from 0 to 100 km / h in 12.5 seconds and weighed approx. 770 kg when empty. A total of 1868 units were produced, 258 vehicles with the 3-cylinder engine and 1610 vehicles with the Ford V4 engine.

The Turin-based design company Coggiola redesigned the body of the Sonett Saab again in 1969. This is how the Sonett III was born, equipped with the same Ford V4 engine. It was produced from 1970 to 1974. In 1971 the displacement was increased to 1699 cm³. The power remained at 65 hp. The car was 3900 mm long, 1500 mm wide and 1190 mm high. The Sonett III was the first Saab in the V4 range with a floor-mounted gear lever. The drag coefficient was 0.31. Because of its high sales price, the Sonett III found fewer buyers than hoped, and American emissions and safety laws ultimately led to production being discontinued after only 8,351 vehicles. The most successful year of the Saab 97 was also its last. In 1974, 2483 sonnets were made.
