The Bahnpark Augsburg is a railway museum in Augsburg on a part of the former Augsburg depot of Deutsche Bahn AG . The Bahnpark Augsburg is currently under construction and is therefore only open to visitors for certain events. In the future, there twenty-nine historic locomotives from the member countries of the EU and Switzerland in listed roundhouse with turntable , the so-called. "Roundhouse Europe" , will be exhibited. The buildings in the Augsburg Railway Park include the “Rundhaus Europa”, three historic steam locomotive halls with a workshop atmosphere and a historic forge .

Museum project and events

The museum offers the state railways of all EU countries the opportunity to exhibit a historical locomotive (so-called ambassador locomotive ) in the "Rotunda Europe". The respective country of origin is the cultural focus of certain events. For this purpose, the historic locomotives are made available to visitors for inspection on the open-air site or presented on the turntable. From time to time there are also so-called country weeks with sometimes additional special exhibitions on certain topics. As part of some events, jazz concerts take place in the large steam engine hall and demonstrations in the smithy, the catering is an integral part. Regular jazz concerts (Jazz im Bahnpark) take place every first Sunday from May to November. In addition to the ambassador's locomotives, the collection also includes other museum locomotives, which so far can only be partially viewed. The entire vehicle collection is continuously expanded. In the Advent season , special steam train trips are organized that invite you to travel in a wintry landscape.

Due to official requirements, a visit to the Bahnpark has not been possible since 2017 and has only been partially possible again since summer 2020.

The government of Upper Bavaria has approved zoning decision of 18 December 2017 the project requested by the Augsburg Railway Park gGmbH for the proposed change of use of an area with two large railway factory buildings into a railway museum with museum workshop. Gastronomy for museum visitors and events relating to future use of the museum are also possible. With the decision, the state railway supervision at the government of Upper Bavaria grants the Bahnpark Augsburg gGmbH permission to start railway operations in accordance with Section 7f of the General Railway Act (AEG). The Bahnpark Augsburg gGmbH is therefore a recognized railway infrastructure company (EIU) and is authorized to exercise the operational management on your listed track systems of the "public service facility Bahnpark Augsburg" itself. The planning approval decision of the government of Upper Bavaria dated December 19, 2017, which lays the legal basis for the further development of the culture and museum project, has received nationwide media attention. Among other things, the Augsburger Allgemeine, the Süddeutsche Zeitung, Fokus, the Nordbayerische Kurier, the Bayerischer Rundfunk, the German press agency dpa reported. As a railway infrastructure company (EIU), the non-profit Bahnpark Augsburg gGmbH will take over operations on its own, listed track systems on December 30, 2017. So far, the museum has been under the operating Bayerische Oberlandbahn GmbH (BOB), which has also campaigned for the preservation of the industrial monument in recent years.

The site

Around 1906 the Royal Bavarian State Railroad built two roundhouse sheds with turntables south of Augsburg Central Station . On the site next to the railway park there are other buildings (workshops, cleaning systems, wheelset repair shop and accommodations for the locomotive staff) of the former repair shop, including track systems and signal box . During the Second World War , the area was largely spared from bombing raids , including on the devastating night of bombing from February 25 to 26, 1944, when the main train station and the train station premises were badly hit and destroyed. After the war, the Deutsche Bundesbahn / Deutsche Bahn AG used the site until around 1990. The roundhouse has been a listed building since 1996. Ownership passed to the Bahnpark Foundation (founded in 2005) on October 17, 2008.

workshops

In the workshops, a museum-appropriate reconditioning and restoration of vehicles takes place. For the traffic center (branch of the Deutsches Museum on Theresienhöhe / Schwanthalerhöhe), a historic mail car was restored in these workshops. The maintenance and preservation of the operational and listed steam locomotive 41 018 of the Steam Locomotive Society Munich is also carried out in these workshops.

Mini train

The Mini-Bahn Augsburg, a passenger-transporting garden railway with a gauge of 184 mm (and sometimes 127 mm in three-track operation) has been located on the grounds of the railway park since 2011 . The route is approx. 300 meters and consists of a circuit around the former overnight building and a single-track route along the Europa roundhouse. The fleet consists of the models of the AEG E1 electric locomotive, a Gmeinder diesel locomotive and, since 2013, a real-steam light rail locomotive. There are nine passenger cars in two trains for up to 30 passengers.

Draisine collection "rail fleas"

In addition to the ambassador and museum locomotives, Bahnpark Augsburg is also home to a small collection of draisines from Draisinenfreunde Bayern. This type of rail vehicle was previously used by railway masters for the inspection and maintenance of track systems and signal systems . The collection includes a total of five vehicles, a KLV 11 touring trolley, two KLV 12 and 82 railway maintenance trolleys, a Hungarian MAV Pft-P401 trolley, a rail bicycle and a rail moped. Carpooling is often offered in KLV 11 during the events and is very popular with children. The trolleys KLV 12, KLV 82 and MAV Pft-P401 are currently not operational and are being refurbished.

Raupach steam engine

Raupach steam engine in the middle mount

The stationary superheated steam valve steam engine was built in 1911 by the "Richard Raupach" machine factory based on the R. Lenke system in Görlitz . It had an output of 75 hp. More than 1000 copies of this type of machine were once built, which were mainly used in many companies for the production of electrical energy. The machine was originally delivered to the Schaaf brewery in Niedermendig near Koblenz , where it was in use until 1932. In the same year the machine was sold to the distillery cooperative in Munich-Großhadern . There it was used to drive various units. It was not until the distillery cooperative closed in 2001 that the steam engine was finally shut down after 90 years of operation. The members of the Munich Steam Locomotive Society were able to establish contact with the distillery cooperative and obtain the transfer of the steam engine. On July 26, 2003, after some preparatory work, it was dismantled from the buildings that were already being demolished and brought to the Augsburg railway park using a low-loader truck . There it was only temporarily stored and restored in the northern roundhouse. After the prerequisites for the installation of the steam engine in the "Middle Mount" had been created, it could be implemented there at the end of October 2003. After further work, the steam engine was able to go back into operation on July 16, 2007. This time, however, no longer under steam, but rather powered by an electric motor and illuminated by headlights .

150 years of Rudolf Diesel

Diesel multiple unit VT 12.5 "Stuttgarter Rössle"

On the occasion of Rudolf Diesel's 150th birthday in 2008, Bahnpark Augsburg organized a large vehicle exhibition on the subject of "Diesel Locomotives" on Easter Monday. There were not only diesel locomotives to visit , but also historic trucks , buses , fire engines , tractors and tugs. The motto of the event was "Vehicles that are driven by diesel engines by rail or road ". The VT 12 5 “Stuttgarter Rössle” diesel multiple unit of the DB ZugBus Regionalverkehr Alb-Bodensee GmbH (RAB) was also present , with 220 passengers. On that day, the Bahnpark Augsburg recorded a visitor record of over 5000 visitors for the first time.

watch TV

The SWR reported in its program Eisenbahn-Romantik (episode 613 - "Railway Passion Between Parkbahn, Bahnpark & Panama") about the Bahnpark Augsburg. However, the railway park was mentioned for the first time in episode 575 - "A power car rarely comes alone". There was also reported about the Transparent Train and its new home in the Bahnpark.

The first episode of the show That's Hot Man! - The show from the suitcase of the Franconian comedian Volker Heissmann was recorded on June 25th, 2008 by Bavarian television in the Bahnpark Augsburg. In addition to Volker Heissmann, the participants were the Pavel Sandorf Big Band as well as Roberto Blanco and Uwe Kroeger . The program was broadcast on BR on September 11, 2008.

various

Currently, there is a TEA - train set class 601 with nine intermediate cars, the so-called "Blue Star Train" , next to the Augsburg Railway Park on the former DB lot. Next to it is another TEE, on loan from the Nuremberg Transport Museum. Two powered end cars (601 016-6 and 601 019-3) as well as a compartment car (901 107-3), an open seating car (901 201-4), a bar car (901 303-8) and the last TEE dining car with the original kitchen ( 901 502-2). From mid-November 2006 to the end of November 2006 the Orient Express museum train (Nostalgie Istanbul Orient Express) was stationed in the Augsburg Bahnpark and could be viewed as part of a two-day event. The possibility of a tour met with a great response from the public. The event was accompanied by a jazz concert and gastronomy as well as a special exhibition on the history of the Orient Express . On December 6, 2006, the museum train set off on a special trip from Augsburg main station to Salzburg . The train was hauled by an electric locomotive , not the steam locomotive 41 018 as announced .

The Bahnpark Augsburg is a popular destination for nostalgic trains. The reason for this is the popular tourist attractions in Augsburg and in the railway park itself. In addition, guest locomotives, for example 01 1066 of the Ulm Railway Friends, can be serviced and turned there for the return and onward journeys.

In the air hall, which is not in the area of the railway park, historical rail mail cars are behind. This area is not accessible to visitors.

It was not possible to take care of the railway collection of the Deutsches Museum or rent it to this museum.
