The locomotives of the ČSD class 477.0 were tank locomotives of the former Czechoslovak State Railways (ČSD) designed for suburban traffic in large cities . Because of their distinctive coloring, the locomotives were nicknamed Papoušek (German: Parrot) by the operations service .

history

It was designed as a further development of the 475.0 and 476.0 series . In 1951 and 1952, ČKD Sokolovo built a total of 38 machines. These were numbered as 476.101 to 476.138 . The remaining 22 locomotives followed by 1955. In order to remove the high load on the rear bogie, from number 39 the water supplies that were previously stored only behind the driver's cab were divided. The rear coal and water tank was shortened by 300 mm and additional water tanks were built on the side over the first coupling axle. The space between the water tank and the driver's cab was covered with sheet metal cladding. At the same time, the front piston rod guide was omitted from number 39. The boiler was given a longer combustion chamber and thus shorter heating and smoke pipes.

Due to the increased axle mass, the locomotives were given the new series designation 477.0. The previously delivered 476.1s were rebuilt in the same way in the following years and incorporated into the new 477.0 series (477.001 to 477.038).

After eliminating some teething troubles and constructive improvements, the locomotives fully corresponded to their area of responsibility. They were the pinnacle of the development of tank locomotives at ČSD and at that time the heaviest tank locomotives in Europe. They were equipped with many innovations in steam locomotive development, such as B. mechanical grate loading , Kylchap double blow pipe and pressure compensation piston valve type Trofimoff . On the last locomotives, the axle and rod bearings were roller bearings of the SKF type . The kettle had a pneumatically operated slagging device. The control of the Heusinger type was operated with a compressed air cylinder.

The 477.0 series was also extremely elegant on the outside. Its pointed smoke chamber door, the Witte smoke deflectors and the cladding of the dome on the top of the boiler served as a template for the reconstruction of the class 01 of the Deutsche Reichsbahn . Due to their color scheme, they soon received the nickname "Papoušek" (German: parrot).

They were appreciated by the staff, especially because of their stoker , good acceleration values and high friction load. They were able to move a train with a mass of 800 t on the plain at 96 km / h, on a gradient of five per thousand at 53 km / h and on ten per thousand at 35 km / h. They were assigned to the depots in Prague , Brno , Vrútky , Bratislava , Přerov and Budweis .

In 1971 all the locomotives were still there. With the electrification and dieselization of the main routes, their area of application shifted more to northern Czech regions. In 1978 eight locomotives were still in use as planned, but the delivery of further locomotives of the ČSD series T 478.3 made it possible to retire the locomotives by 1981.

Three of the locomotives have been preserved in working order; 477.013 in Poprad , 477.043 in the Railway Museum Lužná u Rakovníka and 477.060 in the National Technical Museum in Prague . In May 2009 the 477.060 was transferred to Augsburg and has since been in the Augsburg railway park . In the meantime, however, the locomotive has returned.
