The DSB MZ series were 61 diesel-electric locomotives that were delivered to Danske Statsbaner ( German  Danish State Railways ) in four series. These series were manufactured from 1967 to 1978 with the numbers MZ 1401–1461 by the Swedish company Nydqvist och Holm in Trollhättan under license from General Motors Electro-Motive Division (EMD).

history

The procurement of the first series of the MZ was made in order to meet the increasing demand for more powerful locomotives, because the train weights increased in the late 1960s. The prototype, the MZ 1401 , was tested for a year before series delivery began.

DSB MZ (I)

The ten MZ (I) are universal locomotives that received the 16-cylinder GM 16-645E3 diesel engine. All locomotive bodies except the prototype were built by Frichs in Aarhus and the electric traction motors came from Thrige Titan in Odense . The locomotives have multiple controls . The maximum train weight was 1,600 tons. A locomotive had a purchase price of around 2.4 million crowns . They reached a maximum speed of 143 km / h.

Upon delivery, the MZ (I) were painted in wine red with wide side stripes in cream. The impeller logo was attached to the front sides. From 1983 snow plows, additional red tail lights, rectangular buffer plates as well as handles and steps for shunters were installed. The locomotives were originally equipped with steam heating , which was replaced in 1984/85 by an electric heater powered by a separate diesel engine. All MZ (I) received tunnel approval in 1999. In 1992/93 the ATC train control system was retrofitted.

DSB MZ (II)

The 16 locomotives of the MZ (II) series are almost identical to the MZ (I) . They only differ in the position of the battery box and the main air reservoir.

Upon delivery, the MZ (II) were painted wine red with wide side stripes in cream. The impeller logo was attached to the front sides. In 1984/87 all MZ (II) received the red / black color scheme with the exception of MZ 1421 , which had already been repainted in 1977 after an accident.

For use in regional traffic around Copenhagen, the steam boilers were replaced in 1980/82 by electrical heating devices that were driven by a separate diesel engine. A push-pull train control system was also installed. Snow plows, additional red tail lights, rectangular buffer plates as well as handles and steps for shunters were installed. In 1992/94 the ATC train control system was retrofitted. MZ 1425 has been equipped with automatic couplings for transporting IC2 and IC4 multiple units since 2004 .

DSB MZ (III)

In contrast to the first two series, the 20 locomotives of the third MZ (III) series received the 20-cylinder GM diesel engine 20-645E3. With this, the locomotives were prepared for the installation of the electric train heating. The heating generators with an output of 480 kW were installed in 1977/78, the steam heating devices removed between 1985 and 1988. The locomotives reached a maximum speed of 165 km / h.

The locomotive bodies and electric motors were supplied by the previous manufacturers. Outwardly, they differed significantly from their predecessors. In order to create space for larger silencers, the air intake openings were relocated to the roof. They had multiple controls and could carry a maximum train weight of 1,800 tons. The series also received tunnel approval in 1999. A locomotive had a purchase price of around 3,750,000 crowns.

All MZ (III) were delivered in the red / black color scheme with separate tail lights. From 1981, snow plows, angular buffer plates and additional handle bars were mounted on the front sides, the curved corner windows of the driver's cabs were closed with sheet metal in 1988. The ITC security systems were retrofitted in 1982/83 and ATC 1991/93.

DSB MZ (IV)

The 15 locomotives of the MZ (IV) series differed in appearance from the other three series. They can easily be recognized by the significantly lower height of their front windows. They were equipped with the same engine as the MZ (III) . For the train heating, they had an electric heater from the time of delivery. They were the only series equipped with electrodynamic brakes. Otherwise the manufacturing and performance data corresponded to the MZ (III) series .

All MZ (IV) were delivered in the red / black color scheme with separate tail lights. In 1982 snow plows and angular buffer plates were retrofitted. Between 1992 and 1995 the ATC safety system was retrofitted and, from 1996, shunting steps with additional handle bars were installed on the front sides.

Whereabouts

The decommissioning of the machines at DSB began in 2000. Only the first built machine 1401 remained in use at DSB as a museum locomotive and is stationed in Randers . Most of the locomotives were sold abroad, so many smaller railway companies in Sweden had this series of locomotives in stock - among others at TÅGAB , TGOJ , Svensk Tågteknik , Vida , Three T , Motala Verkstad , Peterson Rail (12 pieces) and Inlandsbanan AB (2 pieces ). The Swedish name is TMZ.

Another 16 locomotives were sold to Australia and are used by the Independent Rail of Australia in New South Wales . Two locomotives were also sold to Spain. In 2004 the Norges Statsbaner (NSB) took over the 1411 and 1415. In Denmark, some locomotives remained with DB Schenker Rail Scandinavia .
