The vehicles of the DSB MP series are multiple units that were built by the Italian company AnsaldoBreda for the Danske Statsbaner (DSB).

The multiple unit consists of two parts, an MP motor car and an FP control car , and is technically very similar to the MG series . MP and MG can be coupled and run together. The trains have computer plugs at each seat and flexible entrances that allow level access. The train is called IC2 (DSB) in Denmark to distinguish it from the private railway variant of the MF series, also called IC2 . The delivery series comprised 23 copies.

history

In November 2002, DSB ordered 23 MP multiple units for delivery in 2004/2005 as a supplement to the contract for the order of the MG series . Nine trains were intended for traffic between Odense and Svendborg and 14 units for long-distance traffic. Contrary to what had been agreed in November 2000, the Folketing Finance Committee did not order 90 to 100 MG trains, but only 83 units. In connection with the purchase of smaller trains for the section between Odense and Svendborg, DSB saw operational and economic advantages in converting the order into 23 two-car trains, especially since these are particularly suitable on routes and during times with fewer passengers.

Thanks to the Scharfenberg coupling with the same assignment, it is possible to use MP and MG railcars for a wing train concept in order to be able to offer connections without changing trains according to the DSB concept Gode Tog til Alle .

As with the MG series trains , there were delivery problems with the new railcars. According to a legal settlement concluded in 2009 between DSB and AnsaldoBreda, the 23 trains should be delivered by the end of the third quarter of 2012. The deadline was extended to June 2013. The Atkins report in October 2011 called for the delivery program to be stopped. However, it was not legally possible for the DSB to withdraw from the contract.

According to DSB, the reason for the late deliveries is missing components from AnsaldoBreda's subcontractors. On December 18, 2012, DSB and AnsaldoBreda agreed dates for the final deliveries, in particular that the last trains will be delivered at the end of October 2013. Otherwise, DSB can cancel the rest of the order.

The first multiple unit left the production hall in Pistoia in June 2010. MP 5704 came to Denmark in the summer of 2011, it was the first train that DSB took over at the end of 2011 to begin test drives. By October 9, 2012, eight trains had been delivered, six of which were used for test drives, the other two were converted.

The trains were in regular service from November 12, 2012 between Kolding and Vejle and from December 2012 in regional traffic in the western part of Funen . The first multiple units were formed in December 2012.

Technology, design and interior decoration

The technology and design of the trains corresponds to that of the MG series . They are equipped with two V8 diesel engines from Iveco with a total output of 1120 kW with direct injection . The car bodies are made of aluminum . Both motor car parts are connected with a Jakobs bogie .

The design of the trains is the result of the collaboration between the DSB design team - with a focus on Scandinavian design tradition - and the Italian design company Pininfarina , which is known for its designs for Ferrari sports cars.

The interior of the train is equipped with aircraft-style seating arrangements opposite. There is an electronic reservation system and internet connections. The MP railcar has two toilets. A toilet for 50 passengers at 100 percent occupancy was calculated. This means that the train is better equipped than the MG (IC4) and MF (IC3) series , in which a toilet was installed for 68 or 72 passengers. A transition between the trains in the case of multiple traction is not possible.

Atkins report

In 2011, the Atkins consultancy was commissioned by the Folketing Transport Committee to conduct an investigation to improve the quality of the MG series . The report concluded, among other things, that the MP series railcars that had not yet been delivered up to this point would have a negative impact on the planned deployment concept.

The DSB later reported that the possibilities to withdraw from the contract were being investigated. However, this was not legally possible.

Trial run

DSB received from Trafikstyrelsen on May 3, 2012 the approval for the test operation without passengers for the multiple unit MP 5704 . Trial operation began on May 29, 2012. In order to find technical errors and to simulate a journey with passengers during rush hour, the train was loaded with 14.5 tons of water. On July 25, 2012, the DSB received approval for trial operation for a further four trains. It was then possible to carry out test drives with coupled railcars.

Operation is similar to that of the MG series . However, the new train reacts less quickly to commands from the driver's cab. In addition, fewer errors occurred than with the MG .

Delivery situation

The first train was originally due to go into service at the end of 2004. While the first MG set went into operation in 2007, it took until June 2010 for the first MP unit to leave the production facility in Italy. The first train, MP 5704 , came to Padborg on July 19, 2011 to test the ATC train control system .

The train was formally taken over by DSB in November 2012. A total of eight MP trains were delivered on October 9, 2012, six of which were approved for trial operation.

According to the DSB, AnsaldoBreda continued to have major problems with the supply of components and coordination problems in their production lines, especially at the Reggio Calabria location . More trains should be delivered in December 2012, the rest in the course of 2013.

commitment

On November 12, 2012, the first railcar ran between Kolding and Vejle. From December 9, 2012, five pairs of trains could be driven daily from Monday to Friday. In addition, regular regional traffic on the island of Funen began on the same date.

Shutdown

The DSB MP (IC2) never came into a stable condition, which is a prerequisite for regular use in rail traffic. In order to reduce the dependency on the unsafe train sets, investments such as the procurement of new electric locomotives were planned. It was only used to a very limited extent. In future, the focus will be on the operational safety of the IC4 sets, which cannot be dispensed with in the medium term. All 23 IC2 sets and 5 IC4 sets were shut down with effect from 23 August 2016.

With the shutdown of all 23 IC2 trains on August 23, 2016, a depreciation of 588 million crowns was added to the balance sheet. At the same time, five IC4 sets that were no longer needed and also parked were written off with 85 million crowns.

Whereabouts

Romania

On June 23, 2017, the DSB announced the sale of up to 15 trains to a foreign buyer. The Direktør for Strategi og Togmateriel i DSB ( German : roughly: Director for Strategy and Vehicles ) Jürgen Müller explained that, according to the contract of June 16, 2017, the trains will be taken over by the buyer without any guarantee. The buyer, Astra Trans Carpatic , initially took over the three trains 5714, 5718 and 5721, which are required for the necessary approvals for operation by the buyer by the Romanian approval authority AFER. The other twelve trains will only be taken over after receiving the operating license. In the factory of the Astra Vagoane Călători wagon factory in Arad , the vehicles were appropriately prepared and repainted. On September 8, 2018, a test drive took place on the Timișoara - Arad - Oradea - Baia Mare route . From the timetable change in December, scheduled traffic was planned, with the trains running in pairs from Timișoara to Arad and Oradea. After the wing there, one unit should go on to Baia Mare and the other to Cluj-Napoca. The other 12 trains were to be transferred for use in Romania after prior approval and put into operation by April 2019.

Scheduled traffic began on November 8, 2018 with a pair of trains Arad - Oradea - Arad.

Denmark

One train was taken over by the Danish Railway Museum ( Danish : Danmarks Jernbanemuseum ) in Odense . In February 2020, ten trains were parked in Tinglev station.

The remaining seven units are to be scrapped after removing usable spare parts.
