geography
The municipality, which is one of Sweden's larger municipalities in terms of area, stretches around 170 kilometers along the Ströms Vattudal lake system on the upper reaches of the Faxälven river to the northwest to the Norwegian border. The north-western part of the municipality lies in the Scandinavian Mountains , while the south-eastern part is in the foreland, which is characterized by numerous lakes and used for agriculture.

There are Lutheran churches in the villages of Ström, Alanäs , Gåxsjö , Hammerdal , Fjällsjö , Bodum , Tåsjö and Frostviken ; they belong to the diocese of Härnösand of the Church of Sweden . There are also Baptist churches in Norråker and Hoting and Pentecostal churches in Gäddede and Strömsund. There is no Catholic community in Strömsund; the next place of worship is Östersund .
economy
The biggest employer these days is the municipality. Industrial companies are located in Hammerdal and Hoting.
