Gäddede ( South Sami Tjeedtege ) is a locality ( tätort ) in the town of Strömsund in the extreme northwest of the Swedish province of Jämtland County and the historic province (landskap) Jämtland , near the border with the Swedish countryside Lapland and the Norwegian province of Trøndelag . In addition, Gäddede is the capital of the Frostviken parish .
geography
The village is located in the Swedish fells on the upper reaches of the Ströms Vattudal water system . Both Sweden's largest canyon , Hällingsåfallet , and Sweden's longest grotto , Korallgrottan , are located near the village.
In 2015, the Statistiska centralbyrån designated the south-eastern district on the opposite bank of the river, which is located approximately separately - there is a hospital, open-air museum (Hembygdsgård) and sports fields - as an independent Småort .
Place name
The place name Gäddede is first recorded as Gädd Edet in 1763 . It initially referred to the land bridge between the two lakes Kvarnbergsvattnet and Hetögeln and was then taken over by the post and customs station established there. The name is made up of the Swedish words “ gädda ” for pike and “ ed ” for passage through or along the water. One interpretation is that the waters in the area are said to be particularly rich in this species of fish, as pike cannot get any further than this on their migration upstream.
