Coordinates: 63 ° 11 ′ N , 14 ° 38 ′ E Östersund is a municipality ( Swedish commun ) in the Swedish province of Jämtlands län and the historic province of Jämtland . The main town of the municipality is Östersund .
geography
The municipality extends from Lake Storsjön (including Storsjöodjuret ) about 60 kilometers to the northeast. The Indalsälven flows through the municipality .
The European roads 14 and 45 , the Reichsstraße 87 as well as the railway line Stockholm - Ånge - Trondheim and the inland railway run through the municipality . There is also Åre Östersund Airport .
history
1786 was the place Östersund by King Gustav III. raised to the city and the administration of the community moved from Frösön to there. Östersund became wealthy in the 19th century through the timber industry.

economy
Östersund used to be an important agricultural community, but today the administration and service sectors dominate. The provincial administration, the administration of the provincial council, the municipal administration and military institutions are important employers in the public sector. The education sector with the university , the labor market administration and some private companies in the field of information technology is also important. Besides the main town, Tändsbyn , Lit and Brunflo are industrial locations .
Attractions
The islands of Andersön , Skansholmen and Isön in Storsjön are nature reserves.
On the mainland near the islands there is a medieval church ruin with the ruin of a defense tower, which King Sverre had built in 1178 after a victory on the ice of Storsjön. Not far away, in Brunflo, is a second medieval defense tower, probably built as a counterpart.
The Frösö observation tower, the top of which is 468 meters above sea level, offers a panoramic view of Östersund, Frösön and Storsjön.
The Storsjöyran music festival takes place in Östersund at the end of July .
Zoos
The Moose Garden moose farm in Orrviken near Östersund allows you to experience moose up close.
The Frösö Zoo is home to over 700 animal species.
Museums
The Jamtli open-air museum shows the history of the region, prepared for children. The Östersund City Museum shows the history of the city of Östersund from 1786 to 1930. There is also an Airplane Museum , a Police Museum and the Sommarhagen Museum .
