Coordinates: 64 ° 16 ' N , 16 ° 24' O Dorotea is a municipality ( Swedish kommun ) in the Swedish province Västerbottens Lan and the historical province Lapland . The main town of the municipality is Dorotea .
The European route 45 and 92 as well as the domestic railway run through the municipality along the route between Östersund and Gällivare .
history
The parish Dorothea was founded in 1799 and named after the Swedish Queen Fredrika Dorothea Wilhelmina . Together with Fredrika and Vilhelmina , Dorotea forms the so-called Queen's Land.
Attractions
- Hunting and fishing museum: A 20 m long water current aquarium with fish species from the area, as well as a large collection of fishing equipment, souvenir and handicraft sales. (The museum no longer exists in 2018)
- Polar Museum, a journey back to the beginnings and development of the Polar caravans, which are manufactured in Dorotea.
- Kullerbacken Hembygdsområde houses the cultural building.
- In the church of Dorotea the artist Björn Martinus sculpted the Last Supper group as life-size figures. He also created the large Dorotea bear from Siberian larch in Dorothea; an excellent work of art.

- The Västvattenbäckarna in Ormsjö : streams with a beautiful waterfall and a restored Rafter Kate .

- The “ Art Path of the 7 Rivers ”. Along this path, which crosses 7 rivers, international artists have created outdoor art. Various works of art are installed along the road to Borgafjäll.
- Borgafjäll with Borgahällan: A steep wall with a 700 m abyss into the Borga lake.
- Hotel Borgafjäll , was designed by the world famous architect Ralph Erskine .
- Lappvallen , Storviken's Sami camp and Sutme, with remains of the Sami culture.
- Björnlandsleden, a 50 km long canoe trail
Surroundings
Wonderful hiking trails for hiking or fishing in fish-rich waters is possible here. At Dorothea-Camping there is the possibility of renting canoes and looking for beavers , panning for gold in Borga or renting a raft in Storbäck . Bear safaris and guided fishing tours are offered by the tourist office. Fishing equipment can also be rented there.
