Coordinates: 64 ° 10 ′ N , 17 ° 21 ′ O Åsele is a municipality ( Swedish commun ) in the Swedish province of Västerbotten County and the historic province of Lapland . The main town of the municipality is Åsele .
Other places are Fredrika , Nordanås , Varpsjö u. a. m. The Reichsstrasse 90, 92 and the Regionalstrasse 365 lead through the community.
geography
The municipality is located in the foothills of the Scandinavian Mountains on a hilly plateau. The Ångermanälven , where the main town is located, flows through the municipality . The municipality is heavily forested and criss-crossed by extensive wetlands and numerous lakes. Björnlandet National Park is located in the south of the municipality and has one of the most valuable primeval forests in Sweden.
history
In 1634 the area was first settled by Swedes. The place Fredrika, which lies in the municipality boundary, was founded in 1799 and named after the Queen Frederica Dorothea Wilhelmina. Originally, the main town, Åsele, should have had this name, but its residents refused.
Economy and institutions
Forestry and wood processing industries are traditional and important branches of the community. There are also other smaller industrial companies in various sectors. The tourism has gained in recent decades important. In the center of the community there is a sjukstuga .
Attractions
- Stockholmsgata nature reserve with vertical steep slopes and large moraine holes. (25 km southeast of Åsele)
- Offerhallen: According to tradition, an old Sami burial place. Hiking trail with a wonderful view.
- In Lomsö (20 km west of Åsele) there are cave paintings that are 5000 years old.
- Björnlandet National Park

- Local history museum: open-air museum with log houses and exhibitions on the history of the community
- Sjönäsets local history museum (50 km east of Åsele)
