geography

The municipality extends about 30 kilometers along the coast of the Gulf of Bothnia and 50 kilometers inland from the coast. The coast, which is very indented, has numerous smaller islands in front of it. The municipality is characterized by the valleys of the Öreälvens and Lögdeälvens, which form gorges up to 40 meters deep.

nature

There is a nature reserve near the village of Aspeå with many fault grottos and moraine holes. The Vildmarksleden and Lögdeälvsleden run along the Lögdeälven. There are a number of overnight huts and shelters along this 100 km long hiking trail. There are many crevices and caves in the Storrosberget nature reserve five kilometers north of Nordmanlig. The privateer Tjuv Antes is said to have hid in one of these caves.

economy

The largest employer today is the municipality itself. Industrial locations are Olofsfors (Olofsfors AB) and Rundvik (Masonite AB).

Attractions

  • The church of Nordmaling was built in the 15th century and a bell tower was added in the 18th century. In the burial chapel next to the church is the church museum in which works by Klas Engman are also shown.
  • Local history museum in the rectory from 1749
  • 2 km northwest of Nyåker, three railway bridges from different eras lead over the river Öreälven. The second bridge with its 90 m high supporting arches was the longest stone railway bridge in the world when it was completed and has been a listed building since 1997. There is a bridge museum in Nyåker itself.

places

In addition to Nordmaling, there are two other larger localities ( tatorter ) in the municipality , Lögdeå and Rundvik , while three more have lost their status as a crime scene due to a decline in population ( Gräsmyr , Norrfors and Nyåker ) and the previously independent Levar was absorbed in 1970 in Nordmaling.
