history
The place, located in an area that has also been populated by Sweden since the middle of the 18th century , was initially called Viska , from the Sami visteke for 'a place rich in reindeer lichen '. In 1799 it was given its current name after Friederike von Baden , as Fredrika Dorotea Vilhelmina wife of Gustav IV Adolf and Queen of Sweden between 1797 and 1809. The villages of Dorotea and Vilhelmina in the region were named after her.
Not far from the village, a large Buddhist temple was built in 2005 on the initiative of the Thai Theravada monk Phramaha Boonthin Taosiri ; a Buddha statue was erected in 2007.
The town's population has decreased to around a third since the mid-1960s, when it peaked at around 500. By dropping below 200 in 2015, Fredrika lost the crime scene status .
