Milena ( Sicilian Milocca ) is a municipality in the free municipal consortium Caltanissetta in the region of Sicily in Italy with 2888 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019).

Location and dates

Milena is 45 km west of Caltanissetta . The inhabitants mainly work in agriculture or in potassium and rock salt mining.

The neighboring communities are Bompensiere , Campofranco , Grotte ( AG ), Racalmuto (AG) and Sutera .

history

The place was first mentioned in the 13th century. In 1923, today's community emerged from the districts of Milocca (previously Sutera) and San Biaggio (previously Campofranco). It was first called Milocca. In 1933 it was renamed after Milena of Montenegro , mother-in-law of the Italian King Viktor Emanuel III.

The parish church from the 19th century stands on the main square of the village.

An antiquarium shows finds from the area, for example from two tholos-like graves (Tholos A and B) on Monte Campanella, about 2 km southwest of the city center. a. Mycenaean ceramics from the 13th or 12th century BC BC ( SH IIIB or IIIC), pottery in the style of the Sicilian Thapsos culture , two bronze swords and a bronze basin with a recessed bottom and vertical wall, which has parallels in Enkomi on Cyprus and is probably influenced by the Aegean.

To the east of Milena is the village and monastery of San Martino. This was built in the 18th century.

Town twinning

Milena maintains a town partnership with the French community of Aix-les-Bains in the Savoy department .
