Sutera is an Italian community in the Caltanissetta community in the autonomous region of Sicily with 1299 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) and is a member of the association I borghi più belli d'Italia (The most beautiful places in Italy).
facts and figures
The municipality is located about 70 km southeast of Palermo and about 30 km west of Caltanissetta . The area is dominated by a large monolithic rock, Monte San Paolino.
The main occupation of the residents is agriculture, grain, almonds and olives are grown.
The neighboring communities are Acquaviva Platani , Bompensiere , Campofranco , Casteltermini ( AG ), Milena and Mussomeli .
history
People already lived here in prehistoric times. At the time of the Arab rule over Sicily , the place was fortified.
In 1366 the place became the domain of the Chiaramonte family . The city grew until the 16th century. After that, the inhabitants settled in newly established communities in the area around Caltanissetta.
In 1905 a landslide of Monte San Paolino destroyed much of the city.
