Montedoro is a town in Caltanissetta consortium of municipalities outside the region Sicily in Italy with 1,462 inhabitants (December 31, 2019).
Location and dates
Montedoro is 33 km west of Caltanissetta . The residents mainly work in agriculture. Grains and grapes are grown.
The neighboring communities are Bompensiere , Canicattì ( AG ), Mussomeli , Racalmuto (AG) and Serradifalco .
history
The area of the municipality was already settled in prehistoric times. On Monte Ottavio, an elongated hill bordering the modern city to the east, some rock chamber tombs in the shape typical of the Sicilian Bronze Age ( tombe a forno ) were discovered, but also a Tholos tomb, which may be due to Aegean influences. It has parallels in two Tholos tombs on Monte Campanella near Milena from the 13th / 12th. Century BC BC Relics of a Neolithic settlement were discovered under the remains of what is believed to be a second, collapsed Tholos grave .
Montedoro was founded in 1635 by Diego Aragona Tagliavia.
