SJ Z is a series of Swedish shunting locomotives .

prehistory

In the 1920s , horses were used in Sweden to move individual freight wagons , especially within industrial connections.

Lambert Bjurström, who worked in the engineering industry, realized that small motor-driven locomotives would be much more effective. Based on a Ford engine that drove the driving axle with chains, he constructed a simple rail tractor . Bjurström worked with AB Slipmaterial in Västervik. If necessary, he used their free workshop capacity and began series production in his company Bjurström AB Slipmaterial in 1925 . The small locomotives quickly became popular. After the construction of over two hundred shunting locomotives for private railways and industrial companies, production was stopped in 1947.

Statens Järnvägar also ordered such locomotives from Bjurström. The first copies were delivered in 1926, but were not given a number and the series designation Zm until 1933 . They were the type Bjurström 8 , had a Fordson - gasoline engine , a four-speed gearbox , a wheelbase of two meters and a 80-gallon tank. The pulling force of the locomotives was 200 tons. In 1928 a vehicle cost 8,500 crowns without a roof. From number 33 onwards, the cab was the full width of the locomotive and doors were installed.

When numerous private railways were taken over in the 1930s and 1940s as part of the general nationalization of the railways , many of these locomotives came to Statens Järnvägar (SJ). The first vehicles taken over were also given the series designation Zm . Locomotives made by Berg & Company mekaniska verkstad in Lindesberg and Kalmar Verkstad AB , Kalmar were added to the same series .

Z series

When the SJ procured more powerful shunting locomotives in the 1940s, these shunting locomotives were divided up according to performance. The numbering plan was created in principle in 1942. Most Bjurström locomotives were given the designations Z , Z2 or Z3 in this numbering plan . Different types of equally powerful machines were grouped under the same series designation, so that locomotives with the same designation can look different. Over the years, the series classification has been revised and refined several times. The last correction took place in 1958, at that time, for example, the SJ Z42 became the SJ Z3 (IX) .

In addition to standard gauge locomotives, narrow-gauge locomotives with gauges of 1067 mm and 891 mm were affected by this classification.

In 1942, the 55 still existing locomotives of the SJ Zm series with their previous serial numbers were taken over into the new Z series .

This was followed by the takeover of further private railways as part of the general nationalization of the railways, followed by locomotives from private railroad companies, which were sorted into the numbering scheme at Statens Järnvägar.

These were:

SWB Zm 51 / VH 1

The SWB Zm 51 of Stockholm – Västerås – Bergslagens Järnvägar was built in 1929 and delivered in 1930 to Västerås Hamnstyrelse as VH 1 . In 1945 it was taken over by SJ and given the designation Z 164 .

ÖSJ Z 1–2 / CHJ Z 1–2

The ÖSJ Z 1–2 of Östra Skånes Järnvägar were built in 1933. In 1936 it was sold to Kristianstad – Hässleholm Järnvägar and was given the numbers CHJ Z 1–2 . In 1944 they were taken over by SJ and given the designations Z 168 and Z 169 .

HNJ cm 55-56

The HNJ Zm 55–56 from Halmstad – Nässjö Järnväg were delivered in 1930. In 1945 they were taken over by SJ and given the designations Z 182 and Z 183 .

NOJ Z 1

The NOJ Z 1 of the Nässjö – Oskarshamns Järnväg was delivered in 1928. In 1946 it was taken over by SJ and given the designation Z 194 .

SDJ Zm 1 / GDJ Zm 1 / GDJ Zm 71

The SDJ Zm 1 had been in use at Södra Dalarnas Järnväg since 1932 . In 1933 it was passed on to Gävle-Dala Järnvägar and was used as GDJ Zm 1 . In 1945 it was renamed GDJ Zm 71 . It was taken over by SJ in 1948 and given the designation Z 236 .

GDJ Zm 4 / GDJ Zm 74 / SJ Z3 239

The GDJ Zm 4 was built by Kalmar Verkstad in 1935 and was in use at Gävle – Dala Järnvägar . The locomotive was not identical to the Bjurström 8 type , but had two Ford V8 engines with 62 kW each and a mechanical transmission. The center distance was three meters. In 1945 it was renamed GDJ Zm 74 . It was taken over by SJ in 1948 and given the designation Z 239 . In 1956 the locomotive was classified in the SJ Z3 (VIII) series , with the locomotive being given the new designation Z3 239 .

UWHJ Z 1 / SJ Zm 131 / SJ Z2 131

The UWHJ Z 1 of Uddevalla – Vänersborg – Herrljunga Järnväg came into the holdings of Statens Järnvägar in 1940 and was given the number Zm 131 in 1942 . In 1945 it was classified in the SJ Z2 (III) series , with the locomotive being given the new designation Z2 131 . (see: UWHJ Z 1 )

Sales and retirement

After just a few years, the relatively weak shunting tractors began to be retired. In addition, vehicles were given to industrial companies for internal shunting operations. Some of the locomotives are still in operation there today.

With the restructuring of SJ at the beginning of the 1980s, when, among other things, the route network was separated from train operations at the beginning, many locomotives were outsourced from SJ's inventory and re-designated as railway service vehicles. The Bjurström locomotives still available at the SJ were assigned to the SJ's service vehicle fleet and included in the rail service vehicle fleet. SJ himself no longer owns such vehicles.

There are still several locomotives in the SJ livery. Some locomotives were fitted with a new hydraulic transmission. The vehicles are used in shunting in workshops and locomotive sheds.
