SJ Zm is the name of a series of Swedish shunting locomotives .

history

In the 1920s , horses were used in Sweden to move individual freight wagons , especially within industrial connections.

Lambert Bjurström, who worked in the engineering industry, realized that small gasoline-powered locomotives would be much more effective. Based on a Ford engine that drove the driving axle with chains, he constructed a simple rail tractor . Bjurström worked with AB Slipmaterial in Västervik. If necessary, he used their free workshop capacity and began series production in his company Bjurström AB Slipmaterial in 1925 . The small locomotives quickly became popular. After the construction of over two hundred shunting locomotives for private railways and industrial companies, production was stopped in 1947.

SJ Zm

Statens Järnvägar also ordered such locomotives from Bjurström. The first copies were delivered in 1926, but were not given a number and the series designation Zm until 1933 . They were the type Bjurström 8 , had a Fordson - gasoline engine , a four-speed gearbox , a wheelbase of two meters and a 80-gallon tank. The pulling force of the locomotives was 200 tons. In 1928 a vehicle cost 8,500 crowns without a roof. From number 33 onwards, the cab was the full width of the locomotive and doors were installed.

When numerous private railways were taken over in the 1930s and 1940s as part of the general nationalization of the railways , many of these locomotives came from private railway companies to Statens Järnvägar.

These were:

NrSlJ 1

The NrSlJ 1 of Norra Södermanlands Järnväg was built in 1929 and delivered in 1930. A year later it was taken over by SJ and was given the name Zm 25 when the number was assigned in 1933 .

UGJ Z 1-3

The UGJ Z 1–2 of Uppsala – Gävle Järnväg were built in 1931, the UGJ Z 3 in 1933. In the same year all three were taken over by SJ and were given the designation Zm 46-48 when the number was assigned .

OKB Z 1

The OKB Z 1 of the Ostkustbanan was delivered in 1931. In 1933 it was taken over by SJ and was given the designation Zm 49 when the number was assigned .

AGV 1

The AGV 1 of the AB Trafikförbundets Verkstäd was delivered in 1931. In 1933 it was taken over by SJ and was given the designation Zm 50 when the number was assigned .

HHJ 41

The HHJ 41 had been with the Kungl since 1927 . Skånska Husarregementet in action in Helsingborg. It was bought by SJ in 1938 and given the designation Zm 129 .

VBHJ Z 1

The VBHJ Z 1 had been in use at Varberg – Borås – Herrljunga Järnväg since 1930 . It was taken over by SJ in 1940 and was given the designation Zm 130 .

UWHJ Z 1

The UWHJ Z 1 was built in 1935 by Berg & Company and was in use at Uddevalla – Vänersborg – Herrljunga Järnväg . The locomotive was not identical to the Bjurström 8 type and had a four-cylinder Ford MTR-24 engine with 36 hp. Its length was 5.22 m, the center distance 1.2 m, the service weight 3.7 tons and it had a top speed of 40 km / h. The petrol-mechanical power transmission took place with a chain drive to the driving axle. It was taken over by SJ in 1940 and was given the designation Zm 131 .

UWHJ Z 2

The UWHJ Z 2 was a Bjurström 8 locomotive that had been in service with Uddevalla – Vänersborg – Herrljunga Järnväg since 1938 . It was taken over by SJ in 1940 and given the designation Zm 132 .

GBJ Z 74

The GBJ Z 74 was built by Berg & Company in 1938 and was used by Göteborg – Borås Järnväg . It had the same design as the UWHJ Z 1 and was named Zm 133 .

Sales before re-drawing in the new numbering plan

  • Zm 7 was sold to Motala Verkstad in 1939 and was given number 2 there. It was scrapped in Motala around 1976 .
  • Zm 12 was sold to Kooperativa Förbundet för Lycksele Industri AB in 1941 and scrapped in Örnsköldsvik around 1951 .
  • Zm 17 was handed over to Uddeholms AB in 1942 and became No. 11 (I) there, went to Skoghall as locomotive No. 13 in 1949 and was sold to Nejmans export affair in Trollhättan in 1956 . It was scrapped there in 1964.
  • Zm 21 was sold to AB Fajans Tegelbruk in Falkenberg in 1937 and scrapped in 1965.

Further development and whereabouts

When the SJ procured more powerful shunting locomotives in the 1940s, it was decided to divide them into series according to power. All remaining locomotives were added to the Z series in 1942 , which was expanded over the years to include additional units.

The vehicles, which are now around eighty years old, have been partially scrapped or sold by SJ to industrial companies / railway companies. As an example, the Zm 24, built in 1931, should be mentioned, which was sold to Inlandsbanan AB and is used for shunting in Mora . Now she even wears UIC - marking the Swedish vehicle register .
