history
Nora is an old mining town and one of the best preserved wooden towns in Sweden. Most of the buildings date from the 18th and 19th centuries and are still inhabited today or serve as business premises. At the same time as Lindesberg, Nora was granted city privileges in 1643 , as the state tried in vain to force the residents of both places to relocate to the newly founded city of Järle .
On March 5, 1856, Nora received a railway connection on the Nora – Ervalla line . In 1874 the line to Karlskoga ( Nora – Karlskoga Järnväg ) was added, which in 1876 was extended to the Otterbäcken harbor on Vänern. Passenger traffic was discontinued on both routes in 1966 and freight traffic in the 1980s. Since 1986, the Nora Bergslags Veteran-Jernväg company has been running museum railway operations on both lines from Nora station.Together with Nora and Pershyttan, they received the Europa Nostra Prize , an international award for the preservation of buildings and cultural assets.
