Axel Hambræus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Axel Edward Hambræus (born January 1, 1890 in Nora , † February 22, 1983 in Orsa , Kopparbergs län ) was a Swedish writer and pastor.

Life

Hambræus was born in 1890 as the eldest son of the organist Axel Edvard Hambræus and his wife Maria Johansson. Gustav Ragnar Hambræus, born a year later, later became a bank director in Stockholm . Axel Hambræus studied theology in Uppsala , went as a young pastor to Leksand , then to Siljansnäs and a short period in Arborga, finally in 1916 with his wife Berta Melander (1881–1962) to Orsa . On May 25, 1919, their son Gunnar was born there, who later became an engineer and u. a. worked as a technical advisor to the Swedish Embassy in Washington, DC and for the International Atomic Energy Agency . Hambraeus was vicar in the parish of Orsa from 1942 to 1957 and contract propst in Rättvik from 1950 to 1957 .

plant

As a writer, Hambræus wrote both children's and adult literature. He took the motifs of his books from his childhood in the Västmanland mining area and in Dalarna.

In 1953 he published the novel The Pastor of Uddarbo , which was based on the life of the raftsman Oscar Leonard Sjödin. Because of his poor education, he had to fight for a long time to become a pastor, but had an unstoppable thirst for action. Hambræus also described its use in a new church. The novel was filmed in 1957 with Max von Sydow in the leading role.

The novel Marit contains the fight of a woman for her farm near Lake Orsa , whose husband is missing, and who has to fight her way back from Gothenburg to Dalarna with three children .

The son of an organist also composed folk and chamber music .

reception

Especially the Roman Pastor of Uddarbo is quoted several times by theologians in the German-speaking area. For example, one takes up his quote from the greatest miracle that God does in human hearts: "It happens when we open our hearts to help our neighbor in internal or external need - through the spirit of God's love" .

The pastor of Uddarbo , Marit , Anneli and the Christmas stories saw a number of new editions in Christian publishers, which lasted until the 1980s. Many of Axel Hambræus' stories were published in collections by this publisher during the late 1950s, such as B. In For tired eyes of the Christian publishing house in Constance or Eight Pages of Joy by the Rufer publishing house in Gütersloh.
