Iljans made his debut in the Freestyle World Cup on November 30, 2002 and finished in 44th place in Tignes . At the next race in Laax he was twelfth and thus won his first World Cup points. His best finish in the first season was a 6th place in Les Contamines . In the following four years he could never place in the top ten in the World Cup, but won the gold medal in the UltraCross discipline at the Winter X Games 2005.
On February 2, 2007 Iljans achieved a podium for the first time when he finished third in Les Contamines. The second (and last) podium of his career was achieved on January 14, 2009 in Flaine . In his last season, 2009/10, a 11th place was Iljans' best result, which was enough to qualify for the 2010 Winter Olympics; at the Olympic race in Cypress Mountain , he finished 16th. Two weeks later, he ended his sports career.
