Skicross is a winter sports discipline that requires a wide range of skiing skills. Freestyle has been an Olympic sport since 2010 .

competition

As with boardercross , a course with jumps, waves and curves made of snow is used, with four skiers starting at the same time. The ranking is based on the knockout system , the first two (according to the order in which they cross the finish line) advance to the next round. 32 men and 16 women compete in the knockout final, after 24 races (heats) the winners are determined. Men and women ride the same route, each in their own category.

history

The World Cup made its first appearance in Europe in 1998. The world championship tour premiered in the 2000/01 season . From the 2001/02 season, the Saab Salomon Crossmax Series established this sport in ten countries around the world. Ski cross became part of the FIS Freestyle Skiing World Cup in the following season. In November 2006 the IOC declared ski cross to be an Olympic discipline.

The decision of the IOC to include ski cross in the Olympic canon resulted in an expansion of the German national racing series, the German Skicross Tour . For six years, at least four to six national competitions have been held per competition season. This national German series is the qualification level for the World and European Cup. Without a start or experience in this context, only top alpine riders will be able to enter the World Cup directly.

In Switzerland , the Audi Skicross Tour has been the national ski cross racing series since 2009 . During ten days of racing over five weekends, the European Cup, FIS and Open races are organized for the Skicross Elite, ambitious skiers and hobby skiers. Only licensed runners are allowed in the FIS and European Cup races. There are four categories on the open race days: men / juniors with license, men open, junior open and women (with and without license).

In 2010, ski cross was held in Vancouver for the first time at the Olympic Winter Games . The first Olympic champion in this discipline is the Swiss Mike Schmid, ahead of the Austrian Andreas Matt and the Norwegian Audun Groenvold . In the women’s category, local hero Ashleigh McIvor (Canada) won gold ahead of Hedda Berntsen from Norway (silver) and Marion Josserand from France (bronze).

With the start of the 11/12 season, Audi will become the title sponsor of the World Cup.

On March 10, 2012, the Canadian ski crosser Nick Zoricic died after a serious fall at the World Cup final in Grindelwald . He was the first ski crosser ever to have a fatal accident in a World Cup race.
