history

Oberndorf is mentioned for the first time in records of the prince provost of Berchtesgaden from 1125 to 1136 as "Oberndorf" . In 1151 the hamlet of Wiesenschwang is mentioned in a papal confirmation of ownership for Rott Monastery as "Wisinchsuuanch" . In 1422 a parish church, consecrated to the patronage of the apostles Philip and James, was mentioned for the first time. In the 16th century, mining was mainly carried out in Oberndorf . Above all, the deepest shaft on the Rerobichl in the Kitzbühel district , the Heilig-Geist-Schacht, with its considerable 886 m depth, is a masterpiece of mining at that time. This depth was reached in just 55 years. Mainly silver was mined. Mining ceased in 1774 and was resumed several times thereafter, but without major success. In 1969 and 1970 the South African Union Corporation Limited wanted to start mining again, but failed because of a citizens' initiative because there are still silver and copper deposits in much deeper areas on the Rerobichl.

The Giselabahn , which runs through Oberndorf, was opened in 1875 . In 1881 the bus stop was opened east of the community.

The new school building was opened on November 15, 1898 . Seven years later the unveiling ceremony of the Hager memorial took place.

In 1909, a fire brigade association was founded in Oberndorf , as numerous fires had taken place the year before . Even the church was badly affected.

In 1912 torrential rains caused a great flood. Much arable land was destroyed in the process.

In 1927, Oberndorf was separated from St. Johann in Tirol and made an independent municipality after attempts in this direction had failed in 1892 and 1911. In 1892 there was already a municipal council resolution on a division into three municipalities St. Johann-Dorf, St. Johann-Land and Oberndorf, but this was not approved by the state government. On February 8, 1927, the following law was passed: “As of July 1, 1927, Oberndorf is an independent municipality!” In the first municipal council elections in 1927, Mathias Hager, Adlerbauer, was elected first mayor .

In 1961 a ski lift went into operation in the Wiesenschwang district for the first time .

On January 1, 1966, the Raiffeisenkasse St. Johann in Tirol and Oberndorf opened its doors. The old blacksmith and wagner workshop was used.

In 1984, which was ring road by the Governor . Ök Council Eduard Wallnöfer officially opened. In this way, the daily traffic problems in the village were resolved and the quality of life significantly improved.

Today Oberndorf is still more of a rural village, but has massively gained in population in recent years. In 2005 the 2,000 population limit was exceeded for the first time. Furthermore, more and more industrial companies are settling here . By 2019 the population had increased to 2,245.
