Alex Fiva (born January 29, 1986 in Newport Beach , California ) is a Swiss freestyle skier . He specializes in the discipline of ski cross . His greatest success so far is winning the Skicross World Cup in the 2012/13 season.

biography

Fiva is a Swiss- American dual citizen. At the beginning of his sports career he was an alpine ski racer , but had no major successes. His best result in an FIS race is a third place in January 2006, in the European Cup he finished 30th in the super combined one month later in Veysonnaz . He contested the last alpine ski race in April 2007, after which he switched to the freestyle discipline ski cross.

Fiva made his debut in the Freestyle World Cup on March 9, 2008 in Hasliberg , where he reached 28th place and won World Cup points. In the winter of 2008/09 he was unable to build on this performance for the time being. It wasn't until another year later that Fiva began to catch up with the world's best when it finished 12th in Grindelwald on March 12, 2010 . The first World Cup podium he achieved on December 19, 2010 with 2nd place in Innichen ; In the course of the winter, three more top 10 placements followed. On January 7, 2012, Fiva celebrated its first World Cup victory in St. Johann in Tirol . Eight days later he also won in Les Contamines , which resulted in third place in the Ski Cross World Cup.

In the 2012/13 season , Fiva was one of the world's most successful ski crossers. Four times he was on the podium of a World Cup race, three times as a winner. He was never classified worse than in eleventh place and decided the Skicross World Cup standings by a large margin. At the 2013 World Cup , however, he could not live up to his role as a favorite and finished eleventh. In the 2013/14 season , Fiva was only able to partially build on the performance of the pre-winter season. He won two World Cup races, but had to make do with 31st place at the 2014 Winter Olympics due to a back injury.

Fiva achieved a podium finish in the 2014/15 season , but did not get beyond 10th place in the other World Cup races. The 2015/16 season went a little better , with a podium and five other top 10 placements. In the 2016/17 World Cup season he won two races and was third three times.

As a compensatory sport, Fiva played American football and was part of the squad of multiple Swiss champions Calanda Broncos for several years .
