Val Thorens is a winter sports resort in the French region of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes . Politically, Val Thorens belongs to Saint-Martin-de-Belleville in the Savoie department . It is located at an altitude of 2300 m and is therefore the highest ski resort in Europe . Summer skiing no longer takes place in Val Thorens. Together with Saint-Martin-de-Belleville, Les Menuires , Méribel , Orelle, La Tania and Courchevel , Val Thorens forms the Trois Vallées ski area with 600 km of slopes and more than 180 lifts, the largest ski area in the world. In November 2013, Val Thorens was voted the best ski resort in the world at the World Ski Awards.

Val Thorens is characterized by its guaranteed snow and a comprehensive view from the Cime de Caron at an altitude of 3200 m. The ski area comprises 68 runs with 140 kilometers of slopes, which are accessed by 29 lifts. The lowest point that the Val Thorens ski pass can access is the valley station of the Plan de l'Eau chairlift at 1,800 m. The highest point is the Bouchet mountain station at 3,230 m. Val Thorens is the area with the highest concentration of funitels in the world .

Val Thorens became known in Germany through the Boarderweek, which has been held annually since 1997 at the season opening in December. A total of 6,000 snowboarders and skiers from all over Europe open their snow season here with contests and beats by well-known artists such as Samy Deluxe, Die Fantastischen Vier, Marteria / Marsimoto Soundsystem, Sportfreunde Stiller and many more.

Since 2012, the SkiCross World Cup has also made an annual stop in Val Thorens in December.

Tour de France

In 1994 there was a mountain finish of the Tour de France in Val Thorens . Then it won Nelson Rodriguez Serna the 17th stage. The ascent began in Moûtiers (481 m) and went up over 36 kilometers to the ski resort. Accordingly, 1794 meters of altitude had to be overcome, which corresponds to an average gradient of 5.2 percent. The ascent was classified as HC with the highest difficulty .

In 2019 Val Thorens was again on the program as the mountain finish of the penultimate stage.
