Team evaluation Festina

The 81st Tour de France took place from July 2nd to 24th, 1994 and covered 21 stages over 3978 km. 189 racing drivers took part in the tour, of which 117 were classified.

The tour was driven counterclockwise, which means that the first high mountains were the Pyrenees and then the Alps on the stage plan. The Massif Central was also on the program, the stage to Carpentras led over the notorious Mont Ventoux . The tour was a guest in England for two days , and the drivers arrived there by train through the newly built Eurotunnel . The enthusiasm on the island was enormous, according to estimates there were up to a million spectators at the roadside. In addition to the prologue, two time trials were planned, one of them on a flat route and the second to Avoriaz in the mountains of the Alps. There was also a team time trial.

Favorites

In addition to the winner of the last three years, Miguel Induráin , Tony Rominger was one of the big favorites for the race. Rominger rode a great tour in 1993 , winning three stages. Right before the tour, he also won the Vuelta a España , which was held in the spring of 1994 for the last time. Since 1995 the Vuelta takes place in autumn. Contenders for a podium were u. a. Alex Zülle and Armand de Las Cuevas . The winner of the Giro d'Italia 1994, Yevgeny Bersin, did not take part.

Race course

The home straight of the first stage to Armentières was the scene of a terrible fall. A roadside officer was standing on the roadside who stepped out onto the road for a photo. The Belgian Wilfried Nelissen crashed into the law enforcement officer at almost 70 km / h, and Laurent Jalabert , who fell over the Dane , was the most seriously injured . He then had to undergo operations on his face for several hours, and Jalabert did without mass sprints in his further career and developed into an all-rounder.

The hour of the favorites struck as expected at the first time trial to Bergerac , which Induráin was able to impressively win. He distanced Rominger by two minutes. The Spaniard then took the lead in the overall standings. The first stage in the mountains began in the flat terrain of the Pyrenees foreland. The only difficulty was the final ascent to Lourdes-Hautacam (1560 m). Induráin set a steady, very high pace on this ascent, which only Luc Leblanc could follow, who also won this stage. Rominger, weakened by an upset stomach, lost over two minutes and even over three on the Spaniard on the following stage to Luz-Ardiden. On the subsequent stage he retired from the race. This cleared the way for Induráin for the fourth tour victory in a row. Piotr Ugrumow turned out to be the only halfway serious competitor, especially in the Alps. There he was able to win three days in a row on Induráin, which brought him to second place in the overall standings. Induráin won this tour with a lead of 5:39 minutes.

Udo Bölts finished the stage to L'Alpe d'Huez in third; this was the best placement of a German at this destination to date. 1997 was Jan Ullrich during his Tour victory Second on the famous "mountain of the Dutchman".
