On the long climb, Miguel Induráin was able to distance all of his main competitors for the Maillot Jaune and was only overrun by Leblanc at the end. In 1996 Bjarne Riis forced the preliminary decision of the overall standings on the stage to Hautacam by outpacing all opponents with a series of attacks and securing victory. In 2000 , Javier Otxoa was the winner in Lourdes-Hautacam. The then runner-up Lance Armstrong took the lead in the overall standings, which he should not give up.

In 2008 and 2014 , Hautacam was the destination of the Tour de France. The stages each started in Pau .
