Javier Otxoa Palacios (born August 30, 1974 in Bilbao , † August 24, 2018 in Alhaurín de la Torre ) was a Spanish professional cyclist and later disabled athlete .

Career

In 1996 Javier Otxoa won the overall ranking of the Circuito Montañés and in 2000 the Prueba Villafranca de Ordizia . He started twice in the Tour de France . At the Tour de France 2000 he won the ninth stage , a difficult mountain stage from Dax to Lourdes-Hautacam , 42 seconds ahead of Lance Armstrong ; he finished 13th in the overall standings and second in the mountains standings .

On February 15, 2001, Javier and his twin brother Ricardo were hit by a car while training on the road. Ricardo died immediately, Javier was in a coma for 65 days , including severe head and lung injuries. Since then, he has suffered from residual brain damage and balance problems.

In 2003 he won a total of seven medals at the European Disabled Championships in Teplice, Czech Republic , including two European championship titles. Javier was at the Paralympics 2004 in Athens successfully when he gold in the individual time trial won and silver in the individual pursuit on the track . He dedicated the medal to his late brother and mother. At the Summer Paralympics 2008 he again won two medals: gold in the individual time trial and silver in the road race .

Javier Otxoa died in August 2018, shortly before his 44th birthday, as a result of a serious illness.
