The pilgrimage church Heilig Kreuz ( La Crusc in Ladin , Santa Croce in Italian ) is located at 2045  m slm below the western wall of the Heiligkreuzkofel in the municipality of Abtei in South Tyrol .

history

According to a document, today's church was consecrated on May 18, 1484 by Bishop Konrad von Brixen (?). In the middle of the 17th century the church was enlarged and renovated. The neighboring building was built in 1718, initially as an apartment for the sacristan and for pilgrims . Today the Heiligkreuz hospice serves as a refuge and restaurant. Next to the church are three crosses with Jesus and the two thieves who were crucified with him on his left and right side. The names of the two thieves , although not mentioned in the Bible, can be found here, as well as for the crucifixion group in the restaurant in the hospice.

Under Emperor Joseph II , in the course of the Josephinism named after him , the church was closed, desecrated and converted into a sheepfold in 1786. On June 15, 1840, the church was returned to its original purpose.

Pilgrimages

In spring, almost every parish in Val Badia undertakes a pilgrimage to Heilig Kreuz, the Abbey parish even walks up to the pilgrimage site six times in procession . The Way of the Cross with the stations of Wengen, for example, runs from Spescia (Spessa) over the Armentara meadows.
