The 27th Tour de France took place from June 27th to July 23rd, 1933 and covered 23 stages over 4,395 kilometers. For the first time in the history of the tour, the longest stage was under 300 km. For the first time since the Tour de France in 1912 , the course was again clockwise, that is, it first crossed the Alps and then into the Pyrenees. 80 racing drivers took part in the tour, 40 of which were classified.
Race course
Maurice Archambaud was able to win the first stage and defend the yellow jersey of the front runner up to the Alps. On the stage from Grenoble to Gap , however, he suffered a faint attack at Col d'Allos and his French team mate Georges Speicher won the stage. After two more stage wins, Speicher also took the lead in the overall classification.
The Belgian Jean Aerts won six stages. The runner-up in the overall standings, the Italian Learco Guerra , was the fastest on five sections.
The increase in the number of days of rest to four and a shortening of the route compared to the previous year helped Georges Speicher achieve an average speed of 29.818 km / h, which was a new record. In addition, the drivers were close together in the overall standings. If there had been no time bonuses for the stage winners, Speicher would not have won the tour: Although the credit for the stage winner had been reduced to two minutes, the Italian Giuseppe Martano would have won the tour.
In the Tour de France 1933, a mountain classification was held for the first time (Grand Prix de la Montagne; GPM), which was secured by the Spaniard Vicente Trueba . France won the team championship.
