The 17th Tour de France took place from June 24th to July 22nd, 1923.

The 15 stages led the riders after the start in Paris , first in Brittany , and then over the Pyrenees to Toulon and Nice on the French Mediterranean coast. From there it went over the Alps back to Paris, where after 5386 km the destination was the Parc des Princes . 48 of the 139 participants were classified. For the first time, bonuses were given to the stage winners. The exchange of parts on the racing bike is also permitted.

Race course

After his victory on the second stage, the Italian Ottavio Bottecchia slipped into the yellow jersey and was able to defend his lead in the overall standings as far as the Alps. There he lost half an hour at Col d'Allos to Henri Pélissier , who won both Alpine stages to Briançon and Geneva . With the newly introduced time bonus of two minutes for the stage winner, he was able to further expand his lead.

With Pélissier, a Frenchman won the Tour de France for the first time since 1911 . His average speed was 24.233 km / h. By the end of the tour, he had earned 17,636 French francs .
