The 40th Tour de France ran from 3 to 26 July 1953 on 22 stages over 4,479 km. Last year's winner Fausto Coppi was unable to take part due to an injury. The Swiss Hugo Koblet , winner of 1951 , retired after a fall during the tour. 119 racers took part in the tour, 76 of which were classified.
Race course
The Swiss Fritz Schär was able to win the first two stages and wore the yellow jersey for a few days . On the fifth stage, Roger Hassenford, who was represented in a breakaway group, took the lead before Schär was allowed to wear the jersey again for two more days. At the end of the tour, Schär was happy to receive the green jersey , which was awarded for the first time.
On the eleventh stage, the tour winner from 1947 , Jean Robic , won after he had crossed all the mountains of the day first and took the lead in the overall standings. For the first time he was allowed to wear the yellow jersey the following day; when he won in 1947, he had only taken the lead on the last day. But on the next stage Robic fell and had to watch the French national team attack. His team "France West" could not support him enough and Robic was more than 20 minutes behind.
On the 18th stage to Briançon Louison Bobet attacked at the Col d'Izoard and after a solo escape he crossed the finish line in over five minutes. On the descent from Izoard, Robic picked up a ten kilogram water bottle, but could no longer catch up with his compatriot Bobet. Bobet took over the overall lead, which he consolidated two days later with a victory in the individual time trial. On his sixth participation, Bobet celebrated his first tour victory. Second was Frenchman Jean Malléjac , who had worn the yellow jersey for five days before Bobet attacked.
