Gerrit Voorting
Gerardus "Gerrit" Petrus Voorting (born January 18, 1923 in Velsen , † January 30, 2015 in Heemskerk ) was a Dutch cyclist .
Gerrit Voorting had nine siblings, his widowed mother ran a confectionery kiosk in Haarlem. During the Second World War he was a slave laborer in France. Three of his brothers also became racing drivers, the most successful next to Gerrit was Adri , who had a fatal car accident in 1961.
In 1948 Gerrit Voorting started at the Olympic Games in London and won the silver medal in the one-day race . He also started in the team pursuit , but the Dutch four-wheeler was eliminated in the first round. In 1949 he was third in the Dutch road championship.
Voorting took part in the Tour de France ten times , in 1956 he wore the yellow jersey for one day and was eleventh in the overall standings; In 1958 he won a stage and wore yellow for three days. At the Giro d'Italia in 1954 he was seventh overall.
Gerrit Voorting was a professional racing driver until 1961.
