Stockton-on-Tees is a middle town on the River Tees in north east England . The city is the administrative seat of the Borough of Stockton-on-Tees and has a total of 80,060 inhabitants according to the 2001 census.

Stockton-on-Tees is the second largest city in the Teesside conurbation in north-east England in terms of population after Middlesbrough . Adjacent towns are Middlesbrough, Billingham , Thornaby-on-Tees , Eaglescliffe and Darlington .

history

To the west of the village is the prehistoric cremation site Whinny Hill . The story of Stockton-on-Tees began as an Anglo-Saxon settlement near the River Tees . The first written mention of Stockton dates back to 1183 , when the Bishop of Durham had an inventory of his land carried out. In 1310 the town received market rights from the bishop .

Stockton's castle is first mentioned in 1376. It was captured by the Scots in 1644 and occupied until 1646, but was destroyed at the end of the English Civil War on behalf of Oliver Cromwell . The Castlegate Center, a shopping center, now stands on the site of the castle. There are no exact descriptions of the castle.

In June 1890, Mayor Robert Ropner offered the residents of Stockton to use an area near Hartburn as a public park. Three years later, on October 4, 1893, the park was opened by the Duke and Duchess of York. After a century, the park was beautified from 2004 to 2007.

The acclaimed University of Durham has had a campus in Stockton-on-Tees since 1994 .

The Stockton-Middlesbrough Initiative is a project to renew the core area of ​​the Tees Valley . Stockton-on-Tees is well connected to the national trunk road network via the motorway-like A19 and A66. A connection to the A1 (M) Motorway is available 20 km west of Darlington . The A135, A139, A177, A1046 and A1130 also run through the city. There are hourly trains from Stockton-on-Tees Station to Middlesbrough, Newcastle and Sunderland . There is only two-hour operation on Sundays.

The Durham Tees Valley Airport is located 10 km southwest of the center and is accessible via the A66 (exit Long Newton to reach). The number 20 bus also connects Stockton train station with the airport.
