The Borough of Stockton-on-Tees is an administrative unit ( unitary authority ) in the northeast of England . The administrative headquarters are in the town of Stockton-on-Tees ; the borough belongs to the region of North East England .
The borough's main town is Stockton-on-Tees , other towns include Thornaby-on-Tees , Yarm , Billingham and Norton . The Durham Tees Valley Airport is also within the Borough.
history
The core area of the borough originally belonged to County Durham , the part on the other side of the River Tees belonged to Yorkshire . With the 1974 territorial reform, the borough became part of the newly formed county of Cleveland . It has been a unitary authority since 1996. On ceremonial occasions, the part north of the River Tees belongs to County Durham, the southern part to North Yorkshire .

Of these, 16 have their own, Kirklevington and Castlelevington have a joint parish council. Aislaby and Newsham do not have such a body; instead, residents' assemblies take place. Billingham, Ingleby Barwick, Thornaby and Yarm are small towns ( Town ), accordingly the council there is called Town Council . Stockton-on-Tees itself is an unparished area outside of this system.
