The Borough of Redcar and Cleveland is an independent administrative unit ( Unitary Authority ) on the northeast coast of England . The borough area was formerly part of traditional Yorkshire county . In 1974 it became a district of the newly formed county of Cleveland and was named Langbaurgh, after one of the earlier districts ( wapentakes ) of Yorkshire. After the county of Cleveland was dissolved in 1996, Redcar and Cleveland received its current name and the status of a Unitary Authority, which is administratively independent. For ceremonial occasions, Redcar and Cleveland is part of North Yorkshire .
The borough includes the towns of Guisborough , Loftus , Redcar , Marske-by-the-Sea and Saltburn-by-the-Sea .
Redcar and Cleveland has a town partnership with Troisdorf ( North Rhine-Westphalia ).
In 2007 archaeologists made significant excavations. Among other things, richly equipped tombs were discovered. For example the grave of an unknown princess from pre-Christian times.
