The City of Peterborough is an administrative unit with the status of a Unitary Authority (independent city) in England . The city of Peterborough and the surrounding towns belong to it . The City of Peterborough is essentially in the area of the traditional county of Northamptonshire .
The administrative unit was created in 1975 through a merger of the Borough of Peterborough with the Urban District Old Fletton, the Rural Districts Barnack and Thorney and parts of the Rural District Norman Cross. These areas were previously part of the administrative county of Huntingdon and Peterborough .
In 1998 the City became an administratively independent of Cambridgeshire Unitary Authority. It thus has the status of an administrative county again, which the Soke of Peterborough , which was largely identical in area, held from 1889 to 1965.
