The City of Peterborough is an administrative unit with the status of a Unitary Authority (independent city) in England . The city of Peterborough and the surrounding towns belong to it . The City of Peterborough is essentially in the area of ​​the traditional county of Northamptonshire .

The administrative unit was created in 1975 through a merger of the Borough of Peterborough with the Urban District Old Fletton, the Rural Districts Barnack and Thorney and parts of the Rural District Norman Cross. These areas were previously part of the administrative county of Huntingdon and Peterborough .
