North Somerset is an independent administrative unit, a Unitary Authority , in the south-west of England . It is bordered by Bristol , Bath and North East Somerset and Somerset .

The North Somerset area was formerly part of Somerset County . Between 1974 and 1996 it was a district in the newly formed County of Avon and was called Woodspring . North Somerset has been a Unitary Authority since 1996, which is administratively independent of Somerset and only belongs to this county for ceremonial purposes. The headquarters are in Weston-super-Mare . Other significant places are Backwell , Banwell , Blagdon , Bleadon , Clevedon , Congresbury , Easton in Gordano , Locking , Nailsea , Portishead and Winford .

North Somerset is twinned with Hildesheim (Lower Saxony).
