South Gloucestershire is an independent administrative unit ( Unitary Authority ) in south-west England .

history

The unitary authority was created in 1996 when the county County of Avon was abolished and its districts Kingswood and Northavon were combined into South Gloucestershire. South Gloucestershire borders Bristol , Bath and North East Somerset , Gloucestershire and Wiltshire and is part of the South West England region . The administrative headquarters are in Thornbury .

Before the area of ​​South Gloucestershire was incorporated into the newly formed County of Avon in 1974, it was part of the county of Gloucestershire. Today, South Gloucestershire is administratively independent and only belongs to Gloucestershire on ceremonial occasions.
