Yate is a town with 21,491 inhabitants (2001) in the Unitary Authority South Gloucestershire in England and is located near Bristol .

history

Yate is at the southern end of the Cotswolds . Archaeological finds indicate a settlement as early as Roman times ; there is evidence that there was a church of Worcester building used for religious purposes around 770. The name of the city is derived from the word Giete or Gete , which in the Anglo-Saxon language meant about the gate to the forest area . Indeed, the South Gloucestershire area used to be largely forested land. The Church of St. Mary dates back to the time of the Normans , but was significantly rebuilt in the 14th and 15th centuries.

Yate was connected to the British railway network in 1844 . In the beginning of the 20th century, an aircraft yard opened in Yate, where British aircraft were repaired during the First World War . Aircraft manufacturer Parnall later relocated its production facilities from Bristol to Yate.

Until the 1960s, Yate was only a small place. The city received its present-day appearance in the 1960s, when settlement measures turned the small town into a small town.

Industry

By World War II , Yate had a large aircraft factory called Parnall. During the war, the company specialized in the production of war guns. Many workers were killed in air raids in February and March 1941.

Yate owns 3 natural products with which it is associated - limestone in the east, feldspar in the center and coal in the west. The demand for limestone increased with the expansion of the roads, while the supply of coal decreased more and more due to the decreasing demand for construction timber.

administration

Yate was formerly part of Gloucestershire county . In 1974 the city was assigned to the newly formed County of Avon and was part of the Northavon district . However, this county was dissolved in 1996; since then, Yate has been part of the South Gloucestershire Unitary Authority.
