Telford and Wrekin is an independent administrative unit ( Unitary Authority ) in England . It has a population of about 167,000 and is part of the West Midlands region and borders Staffordshire and Shropshire . The administrative headquarters are in Telford .

The Borough of Telford and Wrekin was from 1974 to 1998 a district of the county of Shropshire formed under the name The Wrekin . It has been administratively independent of Shropshire since 1998 and belongs to that county only on ceremonial occasions.
