Ironbridge is a place next to Iron Bridge , the world's first iron bridge built over the Severn in 1779 , from which the place takes its name. To make the bridge known, the river valley formerly known as Severn Gorge was also renamed Ironbridge Gorge .

The place belongs to the parish ( civil parish ) The Gorge in the district ( Borough ) Telford and Wrekin , a Unitary Authority (independent local authority) in Shropshire , England .

The town quickly became the commercial and administrative center for the surrounding industrial towns such as Coalbrookdale and Madeley on one side and Broseley on the other side of the River Severn. The bridge's owners also built a hotel to allow visitors to visit the bridge and the surrounding industrial attractions. The place had a railway connection until 1964, when the great days of the coal and steel industry were over.

In 1967 the Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust was established, a foundation to preserve the 35 industrial monuments in Ironbridge Gorge, which are administered by the Ironbridge Gorge Museum. The Ironbridge Gorge Museum is an anchor point on the European Route of Industrial Heritage .

In 1986 Ironbridge and the Ironbridge Gorge and its industrial monuments were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
