The St Margaret's Church is an Anglican church in London. It is located in the Westminster district on Parliament Square , right next to Westminster Abbey and opposite the Palace of Westminster . It is the parish church of the British Parliament and is dedicated to Margaret of Antioch .

history

It was originally founded in the 12th century as a parish church in the surrounding area and was completely rebuilt from 1486 to 1523. In 1614, St Margaret's became the official parish church of Parliament; the Puritans were dissatisfied with the pageantry in neighboring Westminster Abbey and preferred to hold parliamentary services in the "more suitable" St Margaret's Church. A tradition that has been maintained to this day.

John James rebuilt the northwest tower between 1734 and 1738, at the same time the entire facade was clad with Portland limestone . The interior received its current appearance in 1877 after renovation by George Gilbert Scott .

St Margaret's Church has a rare quadruple sundial. There is a sundial on each side of its tower, even on the north wall. The photo shows the blue dial of the western clock.

The east window with Flemish stained glass from 1509, made in memory of the engagement of Arthur Tudor , the older brother of Henry VIII to Catherine of Aragon, is worth seeing . Other stained glass windows recall William Caxton , the first English printer, Sir Walter Raleigh , who was buried here in 1618, and the poet John Milton , a member of the parish.

One of the people who found their final resting place in the church is the Bohemian engraver Wenceslaus Hollar . Numerous celebrities were also married at St Margaret's, including Samuel Pepys and his wife, as well as Winston Churchill and Clementine Hozier .

The ensemble of St Margaret's Church, Westminster Abbey and Palace of Westminster has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO .
