Wellingston's roots go back at least 1,400 years, and finds from the Iron and Bronze Ages and Roman times indicate that the area was settled earlier. The first name was Weo-leah-ingaton and suggests a temple in the forest. It is believed that this dates from before the Christianization of Britain . The name Watling Town was later used because the place is on the Roman Watling Street that led from London to Viroconium (now Wroxeter ). Wellington is recorded in the Domesday Book (1086) and received market rights in 1244.

The Wrekin is 407 m high near Wellington .

Wellington is the birthplace of stand-up comedian Stewart Lee and actor Jeremy Nicholas .
