Bedford is a Unitary Authority with borough status in Bedfordshire in England . A little more than half of the population lives in Bedford , the administrative center. Other significant locations are Eastcotts , Great Barford , Oakley , Stewartby , Turvey and Wootton .
Unlike most English counties, Bedford has a directly elected mayor.
The borough was formed on April 1, 1974 and was the result of the merger of the original Borough of Bedford , the Kempston Urban District and the Bedford Rural District . At first it was called Bedford District and had the Status District . By royal decree, the name was changed to North Bedfordshire in 1975 , and finally to the Borough of Bedford in 1992 .
