The local authority was founded on April 1, 1974 as District Bracknell . In May 1988 it was granted borough status and the name was changed to Bracknell Forest . When the Berkshire County Council was dissolved on April 1, 1988 , Bracknell Forest became a Unitary Authority .
In the area of Bracknell Forest are six municipalities ( Parish ). In addition to the administrative center of Bracknell , these are Binfield , Crowthorne , Sandhurst , Warfield and Winkfield .
Since 1973, Bracknell Forest had a town partnership with the German town of Opladen , which was taken over by Leverkusen after it was incorporated .
