The Moses fountain in Bern

The Mosesbrunnen is a figure fountain built in 1791 on the Münsterplatz in the old town of Bern , Switzerland .

history

A first fountain with a figure of Moses was created in place of an older installation in the summer of 1544; until the middle of the 16th century it was called Brunnen by her Nollen hus . In 1740 the statue was so weathered that it was removed. After a fountain system had existed in the meantime, it was replaced by today's fountain in 1791. The trough and the column were probably designed by Niklaus Sprüngli , and the fountain figure was made by Nikolaus Sporrer from Konstanz .

The fountain figure represents Moses , who is holding the two tablets of the Law with the 10 commandments in his left hand and pointing to the second commandment with his right hand: "You shall not make yourself a portrait or any parable."
