The Junkerngassbrunnen in the Junkerngasse in Bern

The Junkerngassbrunnen - the old names are wells in the Hofstatt and from the 19th century occasionally Löwenbrunnen or Bubenbergbrunnen - stands opposite the Bubenbergrain between Junkerngasse 34 and the corner of Erlacherhof in Bern's old town and is one of Bern's old town fountains from the 16th century .

history

Since the last renovation in 1869, the Junkerngassbrunnen in the version known today has stood in the same place in front of the northeast corner of the Erlacherhof in Junkerngasse. In 1964, a move by the Bern city council to cast the fountain figure of the oldest fountain in Junkerngasse again out of bronze or to have it carved out of stone was rejected by the city council .

A fountain is mentioned for the first time in 1526 at the house of the mayor of Bern . The former mayor Johann von Erlach , also known as Hans, lived in the house at today's Junkerngasse 25, a little below the lower Gerechtigkeitsgässchen, and not in the Bubenberghaus, which was inherited in 1522, until 1530. The first well mentioned was located about 100 meters below the current location, then known as Hofstatt , the old Bubenberg and later Erlach headquarters in the middle of Junkerngasse.

The construction of a well on the Hofstatt in Junkerngasse, which was supposed to replace the one from 1526, was only decided by the council in March 1596. This wooden fountain appears on Sickinger's city map from 1603-1607 near the Hofstatt or the old Bubenberg or Erlach houses.

In 1635/1636 the fountain was given a new, stone stick by the Bernese master craftsman Joseph Plepp . Around 30 years later, in 1667/1668, it was painted. Similar renovation work was carried out on the Herrengassbrunnen in the same period of time . Another 30 years later, 1696–1698, the fountain was provided with a new basin and what appears to be a new fountain figure, a stone lion.

The last redesign took place in 1756/1757, in which a " pillar with many ornaments " was erected on the site of the old well , the figure of the lion was replaced and the whole well was repainted. Whether the lion was equipped with the lance and shield known today with the coat of arms of the von Bubenberg - six-pointed, silver star on a blue background - can only be guessed at that time or even since 1696–1698 . However, it seems likely that the fountain or its fountain figure embodied a political symbol in the party struggles of the 19th century and was often damaged as such.

During the last complete renovation of the fountain system in 1869, the larger of the two basins was replaced by a rectangular granite trough . The smaller basin from before the 19th century was left. The stick on the east side of the fountain, facing down from the city, was replaced by a smooth, square column made of white Jurassic limestone and with a cast iron fountain tube on the west side. In its basic shape and alignment in the axis of the alley, the fountain system follows that of 1596. The fountain figure of the lion, still standing on the stick today, with spear and shield with Bubenberg coat of arms made of bronzed cast zinc , apparently adhered to the outlines of the older statue.
