from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gregorius Sickinger (* around 1558 in Solothurn , Switzerland ; † 1631 ibid) was a versatile artist whose works are primarily known for his large-format cityscapes. He worked as a painter, draftsman, form cutter, eraser and engraver in Switzerland and southern Germany.

Life

Gregorius Sickinger was born in Solothurn as the son of the crossbow maker Diebold Sickinger and his wife Verena zum Bach. His year of birth is - contrary to other information in the older literature - not clearly attested. In addition to Gregorius, five siblings (Ulrich, Franz, Lienhard, Maria and Barbara) are known. Sickinger married Catharina Seyler on May 17, 1580 in his hometown and took the oath there on June 24, 1584. After the death of his first wife, he married Elisabeth Theidtrich on February 5, 1595. After her death, he married Anna Reinhard on September 2, 1614. He died impoverished in 1631 in the Solothurn hospital.

Gregorius Sickinger created a large number of works that are little known today, including numerous woodcuts (for example bookplates and book illustrations) as well as copper engravings and etchings. But wall paintings and drawings by his hand have also come down to us. He is considered to be the inventor of the pantograph, which was then brought out by Christoph Scheiner.

His earliest, dated and signed works are two bookplates from 1574. The best known are his cityscapes of Freiburg im Üechtland (Switzerland), Freiburg im Breisgau , Solothurn and Bern . These representations are u. a. important as image sources for the architectural and cultural history of the cities depicted. His woodcuts are also important for various editions of Sebastian Munster's cosmography .
