Marske-by-the-Sea

Marske-by-the-Sea is a large village in East Cleveland , in the borough of Redcar and Cleveland , England . It is located on the coast between Redcar and Saltburn-by-the-Sea .

Marske is mentioned in the Domesday Book . St Germains Church is located in Marske-by-the-sea, it was consecrated by Bishop Ægelric between 1042 and 1056.

The village has a museum, Winkies Castle , it's not a castle, it's an old house. The house was previously owned by the late cobbler Jack Anderson. It contains more than 6,000 pieces. The “castle” has a website and is open to the public.

Marske was fined 20 marks for his role in the looting of a Norwegian ship in 1180 .

Marske was the hometown of Charlotte Hughes , the oldest woman to ever live in Britain.

Winkies Castle

Charles Dickens visited the village to see the strange turrets of Marske Hall and see the graves of Captain Cook's parents.
